This has been a crazy week! I left for Taiwan on Tuesday morning, August 25, at 4:30 and arrived In the middle of the night on Wednesday. Let me explain some of the crazy details. I spent the first few days sleeping on the floor of the AP's apartment because there wasn't room anywhere else... I got assigned to my first area In ZhangHua it is about a 30 minute train ride south of TaiZhong city. This is where things started to get interesting.
My trainer, Elder Brady, and I arrived at our apartment in ZhangHua, and to our surprise they gave us the wrong keys to our apartment... So I have yet to see where I live. We have been staying with Elders who live on the opposite side of the city. It is about a 35 minute bike ride from our church and apartment. So we lose a couple hours in just commuting back and forth. Hopefully we will get the keys to our apartment soon.
On a better note Taiwan is really amazing. Whenever we get rejected people are really nice about it. They usually give you something like fruit or random things they have in their pocket. I have tried a lot of new things since getting here like this tea called Winter Melon tea (at least I think that is its name I have only ever heard it in Chinese)... best thing I have ever tasted. Don't worry it is Church approved.
My first day with my trainer happened to be the Mid-Autumn festival so the streets are filled with people burning money to send to their ancestors. We went to a members house and they had a barbecue on their roof to celebrate. This is not your American barbecue they have a bunch of little fire grills on the ground and they cook anything and everything on them. It was a lot of fun.
I had to speak in church on Sunday and that was interesting because I do not know Chinese, and I am also convinced the people here don't either. Their accents are really thick and they like to use Taiwanese a lot. So I have no idea what Is going on most of the time. This place is really amazing, It is nothing like home but still amazing. It never stops raining and I love it.
Finally on a more spiritual note we have one investigator. He is a 15 year old boy. His parents are divorced and he lives here in ZhangHua. His mom was baptized in my trainer's last area and that is how we know him. He goes to church when he visits his mom once a month. He loves Church and he came with us yesterday. Which is good progress that his dad would let him, because his dad doesn't really like the Church. The Lord really does prepare people. I do not know to many people at 15 years old who love church. If his dad will give him permission I think he will be baptized.
I am sorry I do not have any pictures right now, I have been so out of sorts since arriving. Next week for sure I will! love you all.
Sincerely Elder Erwin (Wen Zhang Lao)
