February 15, 2016 - 恭喜發財 - Happy New Year! From Elder Erwin

Dear Family and Friends,

I am going to try and write better emails so I so here is my new format.

Monday: For preparation day we spent most of our time helping our sweet friend Barbie clean up her bookcases which had fallen during the earthquake and we moved a ridiculous amount of furniture for her.

Tuesday: We went to a member's house for a Chinese New Year lunch and I, Elder Erwin, got super sick! And they didn't have running water because of the Earthquake! So you could say we rode our bikes back to the church fast...really fast!

Wednesday: Because of Chinese New Year, no one was outside, they are all just eating a bunch of food inside, so we literally talked to anyone and everyone we could find... I think we probably talked to ten people.

Thursday: It felt like a beautiful summer day but it was a bit windy, so like my momma always says, "It is the warm before the storm". It was sunny and then poured rain for the rest of the day. All of our lessons stood us up. 不好

Friday: I don't remember what happened and I didn't bring my journal with me....must not have had anything too important.

Saturday: I met a cool kid and had a lesson with him in the park, he is our new investigator and really seems like a good guy. We had another lesson set up for 8:00 that night and I thought for sure he wouldn't stand us up, so I put tracting as the back up plan (Elder Erwin hates tracting....I prefer contacting on the roads...) Needless to say when he did end up cancelling  on us, I was less than excited with my decision to go tracting as a back up. However, we went and tracted for 5 minutes and someone let us in and fed us food and gave us drinks and they are coming as a family to church next week. I guess I should humble myself and try new things more often.

Sunday: Elder Coleman got the call that he was moving so he spoke in church to say goodbye. Later in the evening we had FHE where we played some games and then I went on a 30 minute exchange with Elder Storey who is in training here in Yong Kang. I was Senior companion for a whole 30 minutes and honestly junior companion is way more fun...:)

Elder Coleman is already on the train on his way to Taichung and I am just waiting here at the stake center until later today when Elder Wills my new companion arrives. I have no idea who he is...I will just have to wait and see.

Here are the answers to your questions.

What do the Chinese characters say in the subject line of your email?
It says Gongxi facai, it is just a saying that they use at Chinese New Year, it is like congrats on a new year.

How do you write Chinese characters on a computer?
There is a writing system called pinyin that allows you to use English letters Chinese.

Are you learning to read and write with Chinese characters?
Yes, this last move call I have been working on being able to write and understand some things so I can get around better. Writing in Chinese on our dumb phone has taken a lot of practice :)

I love you all! We took some pictures this week but none of them were on my camera. So I just have this picture of me when I went out to clean up our balcony. I am such a poser sometimes:) Love you!
